Nutralighting Anemarrhena Extract (Zhi Mu Extract)- a botanical ingredient for joint and metabolic health, centered on standardized timosaponin and mangiferin.
Product Description
Anemarrhena Extract ( Zhi Mu Extract) is a concentrated powdered extract of characteristic active components refined from specific plant materials, with timosaponin as the main active component. It meets the quality standard of 10%-98% timosaponin AIII, and has multiple applications in joint health, inflammation management, and blood sugar health. It is widely used in dietary supplements, functional foods, and personal care products. Zhi Mu Extract selects the authentic Zhi Mu rhizome from Hebei, prepared using water-ethanol extraction and membrane separation processes, meeting content standards for timosaponin and mangiferin, making it a high-quality raw material for joint and metabolic health products.
Zhi Mu is a classic Chinese medicine used to clear heat and reduce fire. Weichang in Hebei is a genuine production area. In traditional applications, Zhi Mu Extract is used for heat clearing and metabolic health and is a common raw material in related Chinese medicine preparations.

Introduction to Plant Material
The raw material of Anemarrhena Extract product is the dried rhizome of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge, a plant of the Liliaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hebei, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, and other regions. Anemarrhena is an important herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine for clearing heat and purging fire. It is recorded in Volume I of the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
Core Benefits
Anemarrhena asphodeloides extract has a traditional basis for applications in joint health and inflammation management. Its core active components, timosaponin and mangiferin, have shown certain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in in vitro studies. Some research suggests that these components may be involved in regulating glucose metabolism (such as affecting α-glucosidase-related pathways). Relevant conclusions are mainly based on in vitro and animal experiments. Specific effects need to be comprehensively evaluated in combination with product form and usage dosage, and claims in end products should comply with the regulations of the sales territory.
Regulatory and Regional Access Status
The following information is organized based on publicly available regulatory data. Actual market access should be based on the latest regulations of the target country.
| Region/Country | Regulatory Status | Key Notes |
| European Union (EFSA) | Traditional herbal medicine / Food supplements | EU Directive 2004/24/EC regulates traditional herbal medicines; extracts used as ingredients in food supplements must comply with EU Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 requirements (some traditional herbs benefit from a simplified procedure). |
| China (NHC/NMPA) | Health food ingredients / New resource foods | Based on the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and standards such as GB 16740; some varieties are included in the health food ingredient catalog or can be used in ordinary food catalogs, and the latest regulatory status of each variety must be verified specifically. |
| Japan (MHLW) | Food additives / Health food ingredients | Extracts are used as food additives or ingredients in health foods; some varieties need to be declared under the functional food labeling system. |
Application Directions and Recommended Dosage
| Application Direction | Recommended Addition Amount | Applicable Dosage Form | Remarks |
| Oral solid drinks / instant powder | According to specifications | Stick, bag, can packaging | Can be blended with other functional ingredients, recommended to control dosage using standardized extracts |
| Compressed candy / capsules | According to specifications | Tablets, hard capsules | Each capsule recommended to contain 250~500 mg of extract, 2~3 times daily |
| Oral liquid / functional beverages | According to specifications | Glass bottles, PET bottles | It is recommended to disperse in warm water before adding to the system, paying attention to pH stability |
| Personal care skincare products | 0.1~2.0%(w/w) | Lotion, serum, mask | Solubility and stability need to be evaluated according to the formulation system |
Recommended Daily Dosage Reference
The following dosage benchmarks are explicitly defined for the finished extract powder obtained by water extraction/ethanol extraction from the dried rhizome of Anemarrhena asphodeloides, not for the dosage of dried Anemarrhena asphodeloides decoction pieces:
- For daily health care internal administration, the recommended dosage is 1.5-3 grams per day, taken with warm water in two divided doses after meals to reduce gastrointestinal irritation.
- For medicinal conditioning, it should be used under the guidance of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, with a maximum dosage not exceeding 6 grams per day and a consecutive administration period not exceeding 2 weeks.
- For high-purity total saponin extracts (with saponin content > 30%), the dosage shall be further halved in accordance with the product labeling, and the dosage of ordinary extracts shall not be directly applied as a reference.
Other Notes
- Contraindications: Individuals with spleen and stomach deficiency with cold symptoms and aversion to cold; those with chronic loose stools; those with an unresolved external invasion of wind-cold; and those with kidney yang deficiency.
- Use with caution: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and patients with low blood pressure or chronic liver or kidney disease must consult a TCM practitioner for a differential diagnosis before use.
- Drug interactions: When used in combination with antidiabetic agents, diuretics or glucocorticoids, blood glucose, electrolyte levels and blood pressure must be monitored to avoid discomfort caused by additive effects.
- Risks of improper use: Long-term use in excessive doses may damage the yang qi of the spleen and stomach, leading to adverse reactions such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea and loss of appetite.
