Introduction of Plant Material
The raw material of Gleditsia Sinensis Extract product is the dried mature fruit of the leguminous plant Gleditsia sinensis Lam. It is mainly produced in Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, and other regions. Gleditsia is an important medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine for removing phlegm and opening orifices. It is recorded in Volume I of the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
Core Benefits
Gleditsia sinensis (Soapberry) extract is traditionally known for its ability to expel phlegm and cleanse. Its saponin components possess good surface activity, foaming, and emulsifying properties, making it a common ingredient in natural cleaning and personal care products. In vitro studies have shown that soapberry saponins exhibit certain antioxidant and mild antibacterial activities. Applications related to expectorating and respiratory health are mainly based on traditional experience and records in traditional medicine. Specific efficacy should be evaluated in combination with the product formulation and dosage, and claims in the final product must comply with relevant regulations in the market of sale.
Regulations and Regional Market Access Status
| Region/Country | Regulatory Status | Key Notes |
| European Union (EFSA) | Traditional Herbal Medicine / Food Supplements | EU Directive 2004/24/EC regulates traditional herbal medicines; extracts used as ingredients in food supplements must comply with EU Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 (some traditional herbs benefit from a simplified procedure). |
| China (NHC/NMPA) | Health Food Ingredients / Novel Foods | Based on the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and standards such as GB 16740; some varieties are included in the catalog of health food ingredients or can be used in general food catalogs, and the latest regulatory status of each variety must be verified. |
Application Directions and Recommended Dosage

Recommended Daily Dosage Reference
There are clear specifications for the recommended usage amount of Gleditsia sinensis extract in different application scenarios, and the safety standards of corresponding fields must be strictly followed.
Oral Medicinal Use: The processed Gleditsia sinensis extract is ground into powder for pills or powders, with a dosage of 0.5~1.5g each time; it cannot be directly decocted for oral administration. In animal experiments, the administration dosage for cerebral ischemia protection is 38~150 mg·kg⁻¹·d⁻¹.
Cosmetics Field: For full-body rinse-off products, the content is ≤ 0.2%; for hair rinse-off products, ≤ 1.65%; for leave-on products, ≤ 0.87%; for eye-area leave-on products, ≤ 0.3%.
Food and Beverage Field: Calculated based on saponin, the maximum usage amount for beverages is 0.05g/kg, and for categories such as ice cream and condiments, the maximum usage amount is 4.0g/kg.
Daily External Use: Take 5~10g of the extract, decoct it in water and dilute it for skin wet compress. The addition amount in shampoo products is usually 3%~8% (calculated based on raw materials with 40% saponin content).
Other Precautions
Gleditsia sinensis extract is slightly toxic. The raw product is only for external use. For oral administration, stir-fried/honey-processed products must be selected, and direct self-administration is strictly prohibited.
It is completely contraindicated for pregnant women, people with weak constitution and bleeding, and patients with hemoptysis or hematemesis. People with gastritis and abnormal liver function must use it under the guidance of a physician.
Saponin components have surface activity. High concentrations are likely to irritate mucous membranes. Avoid direct contact with eyes and damaged skin, and conduct a skin allergy test before the first use.
Continuous oral administration must not exceed 7 days. For long-term use, liver and kidney functions should be monitored regularly. Stop using it immediately and seek medical attention if adverse reactions such as nausea and rashes occur.
The usage amount of extracts with different purities should be converted according to the effective saponin content, and the raw material addition ratio cannot be directly copied.
