Product Description

Marlberry Extract is also known as Japanese Ardisia Extract, a kind of traditional Respiratory Herb Raw Material – Flavonoid Active Source for Cough Relief and Phlegm Reduction Formulas.

Product Description

In the respiratory health and expectorant/cough-relief category, formulators need plant raw materials with clear ingredients, solid research foundations, and stable supply. Marlberry Extract (Marlberry / Japanese Ardisia Extract) is characterized by active flavonoid components such as marlberry flavone (cruciferous flavonoids), derived from the dried aerial parts of the perennial herb Marlberry (Ardisia japonica) of the Primulaceae family, refined into standardized concentrated powder through a water-alcohol precipitation process. The flavonoid content is stable, with a yellow-brown color. As a traditional plant raw material for respiratory health, it has a relatively solid research foundation for cough relief, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory effects, making it suitable for respiratory health and functional food formulations.

Marlberry is a commonly used cough-relief and phlegm-reducing herb in southern China, with Hubei and Hunan as the main production areas, and has stable cultivation and supply both domestically and internationally. Marlberry extract tablets are commonly used cough-relief and expectorant medicines in China.

Introduction of Plant Material

The raw material is the dried aerial parts of Ardisia japonica (Thunb.) Hook. f., a plant of the Primulaceae family. Mainly produced in provinces south of the Yangtze River. Ardisia japonica is an important medicine in traditional Chinese medicine for relieving cough and dissolving phlegm, with effects of resolving phlegm and stopping cough, clearing heat and removing dampness, and promoting blood circulation and stopping bleeding. Recorded in “Chinese Materia Medica.”

Core Efficacy

The following Marlberry Extract efficacy overview is based on published scientific research and traditional use. Specific efficacy needs to be comprehensively evaluated according to the product form and dosage.

Marlberry Extract has been traditionally used for respiratory health, particularly in relieving phlegm and cough. Its flavonoid components are considered the key active substances, with research supporting its cough-suppressing, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Animal experiments show that Ardisia japonica flavonoids can prolong the histamine-induced cough latency, reduce the number of ammonia-induced coughs, promote airway phenol red secretion, and decrease sputum viscosity; its anti-inflammatory effect is related to the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway and downregulation of inflammatory factor expression.

In vitro studies indicate that the MIC values of Ardisia japonica extract against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae are 0.5 mg/mL and 1.0 mg/mL, respectively. Clinical observations of compound formulations containing Ardisia japonica for respiratory health have been reported in the literature.

The above results are mainly from in vitro and animal experiments, and practical application should be evaluated comprehensively based on dosage form and dose.

Regulations and Regional Market Access

The following information is compiled from publicly available regulatory materials; actual market access should comply with the latest regulations of the target country.

Region/CountryRegulatory StatusKey Notes
United States (FDA)Dietary Supplements / GRASPlant extracts are generally regulated as dietary supplements; some ingredients have been recognized as GRAS (require case-by-case verification). USP has monographs for many extracts.
China (NHC/NMPA)Health Food Ingredients / New Resource FoodsAccording to the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and standards such as GB 16740; some varieties are included in the health food ingredients catalog or can be used in ordinary foods, and the latest regulatory status of each variety needs to be specifically verified.

Note: Regulatory information is time-sensitive; it is recommended to confirm the latest compliance requirements with the local regulatory authority or professional consultant before export.

Other Notes

Storage and Transportation

  • Keep sealed in a cool, dry, and dark place; recommended storage temperature ≤25°C, relative humidity ≤60%
  • During transportation, avoid rain, direct sunlight, and strong collisions
  • After opening, use as soon as possible; long-term storage may cause moisture absorption and caking

Processing and Application Tips

  • It is recommended to first disperse and stir evenly with an appropriate amount of warm water or ethanol before adding to the formulation system
  • Under high-temperature processing (>80°C), some active ingredients may have a risk of thermal degradation; it is recommended to add later or use microencapsulation

Safety and Compliance Tips

  • Marlberry Extract is a plant-derived product, and some individuals may have allergic reactions; it is recommended to start with a small dose during first use
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, infants, and other special populations should consult healthcare professionals before use
  • Marlberry Extract product information is for B2B procurement and technical reference only and does not constitute medical or health claims for end consumers
