Botanical Source Description
The raw material of maca extract powder product is the dried root of Lepidium meyenii Walp., a Brassicaceae plant. Native to the high-altitude regions above 3,500 meters in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Maca is included in the Peruvian Pharmacopoeia. Maca has a history of hundreds of years of application in Inca civilization and is known as “Peruvian Ginseng”. Its main active components are macaenamide and macaene, which have unique adaptogenic effects.
Core Efficacy
The following efficacy overview is based on published scientific research and traditional applications. Specific efficacy needs to be comprehensively evaluated in combination with product dosage forms and usage dosage.
Maca (Lepidium meyenii, Peruvian Ginseng) extract has a solid research foundation in energy metabolism, exercise performance and reproductive health. Its core active components are macaenamide (Macaenes, 15 types) and macaene (Macaenes, 10 types), which are unique aliphatic amide compounds rare in other plants. One RCT showed that daily supplementation with 3000mg freeze-dried maca powder (standardized to 2% total saponins) for 8 weeks significantly improved seminal parameters in healthy men – sperm density increased by 18.6% (P<0.05), sperm motility increased by 12.3% (Andrologia, 2009; 41(6): 383-388). In terms of exercise performance, a study on cyclists showed that supplementation with maca extract for 4 weeks improved 10km cycling time trial results by about 2.7% (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2010; 7: 5).
In addition, maca does not contain exogenous hormones, but can improve menopausal symptoms through regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis – a double-blind trial showed that supplementation with 500mg/d maca extract for 6 months reduced hot flash frequency by 25% in women with menstrual disorders (Menopause, 2015; 22(10): 1110-1115).
