Product Description

Reishi Extract is obtained from the dried fruiting body of Ganoderma lucidum (Leyss.ex Fr.) Karst. It belongs to the Polyporaceae family and is commonly known as Reishi mushroom.

Three extract ratio grades are available – 10:1, 20:1, and 50:1. Each grade is independently verified for total polysaccharides and total triterpenes. The 10:1 grade is suitable for general-purpose immune support blends. The 20:1 grade offers a higher concentration for premium formulations. The 50:1 grade delivers a highly concentrated extract for high-potency products.

Ganoderma lucidum is one of the most widely cultivated medicinal mushrooms in China. Main cultivation areas include Yunnan, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces. Commercial cultivation ensures a stable and sustainable supply chain.

Active Constituents

The bioactive profile of Ganoderma lucidum is dominated by two major classes of compounds: polysaccharides and triterpenes. Our standardisation covers total polysaccharides and total triterpenes as primary markers. Ganoderic acid D serves as a secondary quality indicator.

Primary Markers: Total Polysaccharides and Total Triterpenes

Total polysaccharide content is measured using the phenol-sulphuric acid spectrophotometric method. This is the standard method recommended by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition). Polysaccharides in Ganoderma lucidum include beta-glucans, arabinoxylans, and other water-soluble fractions.

Total triterpene content is determined by UV spectrophotometry at 280 nm. The triterpene fraction includes over 200 known ganoderic acid variants. We report total triterpenes as a percentage equivalent to oleanolic acid.

Secondary Marker: Ganoderic Acid D

Ganoderic acid D (CAS 108340-60-9, C30H42O7, MW 514.66) is quantified by HPLC-DAD. It is one of the most abundant triterpenoid components in Ganoderma lucidum. It is widely used as a reference compound in quality control.

Mechanism of Action

Immune Modulation

Beta-glucans and other polysaccharides in Ganoderma lucidum activate immune cells through multiple pathways. They bind to Dectin-1 receptors on macrophages and dendritic cells. This triggers cytokine release and enhances immune cell activity.

Adaptogenic Activity

Triterpenes in Ganoderma lucidum exert adaptogenic effects. They modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. This helps the body cope with physical and psychological stress. Clinical observations support use for sleep quality and overall vitality.

Antioxidant Effects

Both polysaccharides and triterpenes exhibit antioxidant activity. They scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress markers. The polysaccharide fraction has been shown to enhance endogenous antioxidant enzyme activity.

Hepatoprotective Support

Traditional use of Ganoderma lucidum includes liver health support. Triterpenes such as ganoderic acid D have demonstrated hepatoprotective effects in preclinical studies. They inhibit hepatic fibrosis and support liver cell regeneration.

Traditional and Modern Use

Ganoderma lucidum holds a distinguished position in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for over 2,000 years as a tonic herb. Classical texts describe it as promoting qi and calming the spirit.

In traditional practice, Ganoderma lucidum is used to support immune function, improve sleep quality, and relieve fatigue. It is also traditionally used for respiratory comfort and liver health.

In contemporary practice, Ganoderma Extract is incorporated into dietary supplements targeting immune support and stress management. It is widely used in traditional herbal formulations and modern adaptogenic blends.

Regulatory Status

Ganoderma lucidum is recognised in several regulatory frameworks.

In the United States, Ganoderma lucidum is not listed in the FDA EAFUS database. However, it is widely available as a dietary supplement under DSHEA. The extensive history of use as a food and traditional medicine supports this pathway. Beta-glucans from Ganoderma mycelium have received GRAS status for specific food applications.

In the European Union, Ganoderma lucidum fruiting body extract powder was reviewed for Novel Food status. The European Commission confirmed that the fruiting body extract is not a Novel Food. However, Ganoderma lucidum dehydrated mycelium powder retains Novel Food status under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The fruiting body may be placed on the market as a food supplement.

In China, Ganoderma lucidum is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition). It is also included in the National Health Commission’s dietary supplement raw material catalog. Commercial cultivation is permitted under China’s food and drug regulations. The pharmacopoeia specifies minimum content of total polysaccharides (≥0.90%) and total triterpenes (≥0.50%) for the raw herb.

Japan recognises Ganoderma lucidum as a traditional medicinal ingredient. It is used in Kampo formulations and dietary supplements.

Recommended Usage

Typical daily intake ranges from 500 mg to 3,000 mg of standardised extract, depending on the extract ratio grade and intended application.

Formulation guidance by grade:

10:1 grade: Suitable for multi-ingredient blends at 1,000-3,000 mg per day

20:1 grade: Optimal for single-ingredient immune support at 500-1,500 mg per day

50:1 grade: Best for high-potency adaptogen formulations at 300-500 mg per day

Clinical studies have used Reishi Extracts at doses of 500-3,000 mg per day. Some oncology adjunct studies have used up to 5,400 mg per day of polysaccharide-rich extract.

Precautions

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Ganoderma lucidum is generally well-tolerated. However, individuals with mushroom allergies should exercise caution. The mycelium form retains Novel Food status in the EU and should not be marketed as a conventional food ingredient without proper authorisation.

General Precautions

Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional before use. Discontinue use at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery.

Drug Interactions

Consult a healthcare professional before use if taking immunosuppressant medications, anticoagulants, or antihypertensive drugs. Ganoderma lucidum may potentiate the effects of these medications.

Contraindications

Not recommended for individuals with known hypersensitivity to polyporaceae mushrooms. Individuals with autoimmune conditions should use under medical supervision.

When to Discontinue

Discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider if you experience gastrointestinal discomfort, allergic reactions, or any adverse effects. This product is not intended for self-treatment of serious medical conditions.

Disclaimer

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Statements regarding this product have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Ganoderma lucidum is not approved as a drug by the FDA or any other regulatory authority. It is marketed as a dietary supplement ingredient or food ingredient where applicable. Consumers should consult a healthcare professional before use, particularly if pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a chronic health condition.

In the EU, Ganoderma lucidum fruiting body extract is not a Novel Food. Ganoderma lucidum mycelium powder retains Novel Food status. Keep out of reach of children.
