Product Description

What We Offer and Why It Matters

We supply Burdock Root Extract in three chlorogenic acid grades: 10%, 20%, and 40%. Each grade is independently produced and HPLC-verified. This gives formulators clear options for their detoxification and metabolic support product positioning.

The 10% grade is suitable for general wellness products where burdock is combined with other botanicals supporting liver and digestive health. The 20% grade is our standard offering. It matches the chlorogenic acid content used in most published research. The 40% grade is our concentrated option for high-potency blood sugar support formulations.

Our competitive edge comes from three sources. First, our raw material is sourced from Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces in Northeast China. These regions provide the cool temperate climate that burdock requires for optimal root development and phenolic compound accumulation. Second, we use a water-ethanol extraction process that preserves both the water-soluble polyphenols and the ethanol-soluble lignans including arctiin. Third, every batch is tested for chlorogenic acid and total polyphenol content before release.

Key Features

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) is one of the most widely used medicinal roots in both European and Asian traditional medicine. The root contains polyphenolic compounds, inulin, lignans, and triterpenes. The polyphenol fraction is the primary bioactive component responsible for most of the plant’s reported biological activities.

Chlorogenic acid is the primary marker compound in burdock root extract. It is a phenolic compound with documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulatory properties. It serves as the key quality standard for burdock extract commercialisation.

Arctiin is a unique lignan found in burdock root. It is converted to arctigenin by intestinal microflora and exhibits hepatoprotective and anti-cancer effects in preclinical models. Arctiin serves as a secondary quality marker for burdock extract.

Inulin is a fructan polysaccharide present in significant amounts in burdock root. It serves as a prebiotic fibre and contributes to the metabolic benefits associated with burdock consumption.

Active Constituents

Primary Marker: Chlorogenic Acid

Chlorogenic acid is the primary quality marker for burdock root extract. It is measured by HPLC with UV detection at 327 nm and expressed as a percentage of the extract weight.

Three grades are available:

  • 10% chlorogenic acid -entry-level standardisation for general detoxification and wellness formulas
  • 20% chlorogenic acid -industry standard matching most published research
  • 40% chlorogenic acid -high-potency concentrated standardisation for targeted metabolic support

Batch-to-batch variation is kept within ±10% of the labelled chlorogenic acid value for all grades.

Secondary Marker: Arctiin

Arctiin is the secondary quality marker for burdock root extract. It is measured by HPLC with UV detection at 254 nm.

Arctiin content typically ranges from 0.3% to 1.5% across all grades

Arctigenin (aglycone form) is present in trace amounts and increases during storage through hydrolysis

The chlorogenic acid-to-arctiin ratio varies by growing region and extraction method. Our GC and HPLC chromatograms are included in the COA for each batch.

Inulin Content

Burdock root naturally contains significant amounts of inulin, a fructan polysaccharide. Inulin content varies by grade and extraction method:

  • 10% grade: inulin typically 15-25% of extract weight
  • 20% grade: inulin typically 10-20% of extract weight
  • 40% grade: inulin typically 5-15% of extract weight

Inulin contributes to the prebiotic and blood sugar regulatory effects of burdock root extract. It serves as a natural filler and texture modifier in powdered formulations.

Mechanism of Action

Antioxidant Protection

Chlorogenic acid is a potent antioxidant. It scavenges reactive oxygen species through electron donation from its phenolic hydroxyl groups. The caffeoyl moiety directly neutralises superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals in vitro.

Chlorogenic acid also activates the Nrf2 pathway, the master regulator of the antioxidant response. Nrf2 translocates to the nucleus and binds to the Antioxidant Response Element (ARE). This triggers the transcription of genes encoding glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and heme oxygenase-1.

Metabolic Regulation

Burdock root extract improves insulin sensitivity through multiple mechanisms. Chlorogenic acid enhances glucose uptake in skeletal muscle cells by promoting GLUT4 translocation to the cell membrane. This effect is independent of insulin and may benefit individuals with insulin resistance.

Chlorogenic acid inhibits alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase in the intestinal tract. This delays carbohydrate digestion and reduces postprandial blood glucose spikes. The inulin fraction further moderates glucose absorption by slowing gastric emptying and forming a viscous gel in the intestinal lumen.

Hepatoprotective Effects

Arctiin and its aglycone arctigenin exhibit hepatoprotective effects in preclinical models. They protect liver cells against toxin-induced damage by enhancing detoxification enzyme activity. Arctigenin upregulates phase II detoxification enzymes including GST and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase.

Burdock root extract also reduces hepatic fat accumulation. It inhibits fatty acid synthesis and promotes fatty acid oxidation in liver cells. These effects are mediated through AMPK activation and SREBP-1c suppression.

Anti-inflammatory Activity

Chlorogenic acid inhibits NF-κB activation in inflamed tissues. This reduces the downstream expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. The anti-inflammatory effect is particularly relevant in chronic low-grade inflammation associated with metabolic syndrome.

Arctiin also modulates inflammatory mediator production. It suppresses COX-2 and iNOS expression at the transcriptional level. The combined action of the polyphenol and lignan fractions provides multi-target anti-inflammatory coverage.

Traditional and Modern Use

Traditional Use

Arctium lappa has been used in European and Asian traditional medicine for over 1,000 years. The root was valued for its cleansing and tonic properties. In European herbalism, burdock root was used as a blood purifier and for skin conditions including acne and eczema.

In traditional Chinese medicine, burdock root (牛蒡根,Niubanggen) is classified as sweet and slightly cold in nature. It enters the lung and stomach meridians. Its traditional functions include clearing heat, detoxification, and promoting fluid generation.

The root is also a valued food ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Gobo (the Japanese name for burdock root) is commonly used in soups, stir-fries, and pickles. The Japanese have consumed burdock root as a functional food for centuries.

Modern Clinical Evidence

A 2025 review published in PMC (PMC12939907) evaluated the antihyperglycemic potential of Arctium lappa. The review summarised preclinical and clinical evidence showing that burdock root extract and its principal constituent chlorogenic acid improve glucose metabolism through multiple molecular pathways.

Clinical studies have investigated burdock root for metabolic syndrome. A 2023 RCT found that burdock root extract supplementation for 12 weeks significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes. The effect was attributed primarily to chlorogenic acid content.

Research on burdock root for skin health shows promise. In vitro studies demonstrate that burdock root extract inhibits tyrosinase activity and melanin production. This supports the traditional use of burdock for skin conditions and brightening.

Regulatory Status

United States (FDA)

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) is not listed in the FDA GRAS inventory as a standalone substance. The root has a long history of dietary use in Japanese and European cuisines, but no specific GRAS notice has been filed for burdock root extract in the United States.

Under DSHEA, Arctium lappa root and its extracts may be used as an ingredient in dietary supplements. The root has been marketed as a dietary supplement ingredient in the United States for over two decades. Structure/function claims related to detoxification support, blood sugar support, and antioxidant protection may be made provided the mandatory disclaimer is included. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Formulators should ensure claims comply with 21 CFR 101.93 requirements. Chlorogenic acid is the primary bioactive constituent and should be accurately labelled on the supplement facts panel.

European Union (EMA)

Arctium lappa L., radix is covered by a European Union herbal monograph published by the EMA. The monograph specifies parameters for the dried root and its preparations.

The EMA assessment confirms traditional use for:

Temporary relief of minor throat irritation

Support of digestive function

Topical use for minor skin complaints

The EMA calculation shows that at the maximum daily dose of 6 g of dried root, the theoretical chlorogenic acid intake does not exceed 200 mg per day. This is considered safe for traditional use durations of 4 weeks without medical supervision.

Chlorogenic acid is approved as a food additive in the EU under Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012. It is listed as E-number 903a (beeswax) – note that chlorogenic acid itself is regulated under general food additive provisions rather than as a separate E-number.

China (NMPA)

Burdock root (Niubanggen) is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020 Edition, Part 1. The pharmacopoeial monograph covers the dried root and specifies identification, purity, and potency testing parameters.

The recommended dosage in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia is 6-9 g per day for decoction. The root is classified as sweet and slightly cold in nature, entering the lung and stomach meridians.

China is the world’s largest producer of burdock root. Major cultivation areas include Jilin, Heilongjiang, Hebei, Shandong, and Inner Mongolia provinces. Domestic sourcing is available for clients who prefer Chinese-grown raw material.

Recommended Usage

Dosage Range

Based on traditional use and published research, the recommended daily intake of burdock root extract ranges from 500-2,000 mg. For our extracts, this translates to:

  • 10% chlorogenic acid grade: 1,000-4,000 mg per day
  • 20% chlorogenic acid grade: 500-2,000 mg per day
  • 40% chlorogenic acid grade: 250-1,000 mg per day

The exact dose should be determined based on product formulation, target indication, and desired chlorogenic acid intake. For general detoxification and wellness, lower doses in the 10% or 20% grade range may be sufficient. For targeted blood sugar support, the 20% or 40% grade at higher daily intake may be more appropriate.

Application Forms

Burdock Root Extract is suitable for multiple dosage forms:

  • Capsules and tablets for detoxification and metabolic support supplements
  • Powdered blends for multi-ingredient liver support formulas
  • Liquid extracts and tinctures for sublingual or oral administration
  • Functional beverages -the mild earthy flavour complements fruit and herb blends

Formulation Notes

Burdock root extract has a mild, earthy flavour that is generally well-tolerated in formulated products. The inulin fraction contributes natural sweetness and improves mouthfeel in powdered and liquid formulations.

The extract is hygroscopic. Packaging should include desiccants and moisture-barrier materials. Blend uniformity should be verified through sampling and HPLC chlorogenic acid analysis before compression or encapsulation.

For aqueous formulations, the 10% and 20% grades disperse more easily due to their higher inulin content. The 40% grade may require solubilisation technology or emulsification for optimal dispersion in water-based systems.
