Product Description

What Is Gastrodia Extract?

Gastrodia elata Bl. is a perennial herb in the orchid family. Its dried underground tuber has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over two thousand years. The extract is standardised to gastrodin, the primary bioactive compound responsible for most of the plant’s therapeutic effects.

Key Features

Our Gastrodia Extract is manufactured from premium quality tubers sourced from Yunnan Province. We use ethanol extraction and spray drying to preserve the natural profile of active constituents. The final product is certified free from heavy metals, pesticide residues, and microbial contamination according to stringent quality control standards.

Active Constituents

Primary Marker

Gastrodin (4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol β-D-glucopyranoside) is the main active component. Content is standardised to ≥ 0.1-0.5% by HPLC analysis. Gastrodin is also known as p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol glucoside. It serves as the reference marker for quality control in most pharmacopoeial monographs.

Other Components

The extract also contains polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and trace essential oils. These components may work synergistically with gastrodin. Some studies suggest polysaccharides contribute to immunomodulatory effects. Phenolic compounds provide antioxidant activity that complements the neuroprotective profile of gastrodin.

Mechanism of Action

Neuroprotective Effects

Gastrodin can cross the blood-brain barrier efficiently. Once in the central nervous system, it modulates GABAergic neurotransmission. This mechanism may help reduce neuronal excitability and protect against oxidative stress. Preclinical studies show gastrodin reduces glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in cultured neurons.

Cerebrovascular Support

Gastrodia extract improves cerebral blood flow in animal models. It inhibits platelet aggregation through modulation of thromboxane synthesis. Enhanced microcirculation may support cognitive function and reduce symptoms related to poor blood flow to the brain.

Antioxidant Activity

The phenolic components in Gastrodia Extract scavenge free radicals directly. In vitro studies demonstrate significant DPPH radical scavenging activity. The extract also upregulates endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

Gastrodin suppresses NF-κB signalling in activated microglia. This may reduce the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-1β. Chronic neuroinflammation is linked to several age-related neurological conditions. Modulating this pathway may offer protective benefits.

Traditional and Modern Use

Traditional Use in Chinese Medicine

Gastrodia elata has been classified as a top-grade medicinal herb in ancient Chinese pharmacology texts. It was traditionally referred to as “定风神药” (the divine herb for calming wind). Practitioners used it for headaches, dizziness, tremors, and convulsive conditions. The dried tuber remains listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020 Edition, Part 1.

Modern Research Directions

Contemporary research explores Gastrodia Extract for several indications. Clinical trials in China have investigated its role in managing tension-type headache and vascular headache. Studies also examine potential benefits for cervical spondylosis-related dizziness and early-stage cognitive decline. Most research remains at the preclinical or small clinical trial stage. Further large-scale studies are needed to establish definitive conclusions.

Regulatory Status

United States (FDA)

Gastrodia elata is not listed in the FDA GRAS database. Under DSHEA, botanical ingredients from dried plant material may be used in dietary supplements. Gastrodin itself is a naturally occurring compound found in the plant. Structure/function claims may be made provided the required disclaimer is included. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

European Union (EFSA)

EFSA has not yet evaluated Gastrodia elata under the Novel Food Regulation. Current status depends on member state interpretation. Some EU countries may require a novel food application before market placement. We recommend verifying local regulatory requirements before export.

China (NMPA)

Gastrodia elata is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020 Edition, Part 1. It is approved as a traditional Chinese medicinal material. The Pharmacopoeia specifies a minimum gastrodin content of 0.050% for the raw herb. Our extract exceeds this threshold significantly.

Recommended Usage

Dosage Range

Typical daily intake of standardised Gastrodia Extract ranges from 200-500 mg. This provides approximately 2-25 mg of gastrodin per day depending on standardisation level. The exact dose should be determined based on product formulation and target indication.

Application Forms

Gastrodia Extract is suitable for multiple dosage forms:

  • Capsules and tablets for direct supplementation
  • Powdered blends for custom formulations
  • Liquid extracts and tinctures
  • Functional food and beverage fortification

Formulation Notes

Gastrodin is freely soluble in water. This simplifies formulation in liquid products. For capsule filling, flow aids may be needed due to the fine powder texture. Blend uniformity should be verified through sampling and HPLC analysis before compression or encapsulation.

Quality Assurance

Every production batch is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis. Our facility operates under GMP guidelines. Raw material sourcing follows strict agricultural practice standards. We do not claim organic certification unless specific documentation is available for a given batch.
