Product Description

Nutralighting selects ‌freshly harvested in the current year‌ Perilla frutescens (also known as Shiso or Beefsteak Plant) leaves from Jiangsu, using standardized processes to retain characteristic components such as rosmarinic acid, perillaldehyde, and anthocyanins, providing stable and traceable plant raw materials for anti-allergic, antioxidant, respiratory soothing, and Omega-3 supplement formulations.

Product Description

Perilla Extract (Shiso Extract) is a concentrated powder refined from specific plant raw materials, featuring active components primarily of rosmarinic acid and anthocyanins, and meeting a total flavonoid content standard of 5%-10%. It has multiple applications including anti-allergy, antioxidant, Omega-3 supplementation (ALA 55-65%), and respiratory soothing, and is widely used in health foods, functional foods, and personal care products. The Perilla extract is made from selected authentic Perilla leaves from Jiangsu, prepared using steam distillation and solvent extraction processes. It has a high perillaldehyde content, making it a high-quality raw material for anti-allergic and respiratory soothing products.

Perilla is a traditional medicinal and edible plant in southern China, with Jiangsu and Zhejiang being the main production areas. Perilla leaf oil is widely used in food seasoning, health supplements, and natural preservatives.

Introduction to Plant Raw Material

The raw material of perilla extract product consists of dried leaves or stems and leaves of the Lamiaceae plant Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and Shandong provinces. Perilla is a traditional Chinese plant used for both medicinal and dietary purposes, traditionally applied for relieving exterior conditions, dispersing cold, promoting qi circulation, and regulating stomach function. It is recorded in Volume I of the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.

Core Efficacy

Perilla (Perilla frutescens) extract has traditional applications in anti-allergy, antioxidant, and respiratory soothing. Its key active components, rosmarinic acid and perillaldehyde, have shown certain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in in vitro studies; perilla seed oil is rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA, 55-65%) and is one of the high-quality plant-based sources of Omega-3. Relevant studies on anti-allergy effects are mainly based on in vitro and human studies. Specific efficacy should be comprehensively evaluated in combination with product formulation and dosage, and claims on end products must comply with the regulations of the sales market.

Regulations and Regional Market Access Status

The following information is compiled based on publicly available regulatory documents. Actual market access should be subject to the latest regulations of the target country.

Other Precautions

The key precautions regarding perilla extract can be categorised into four main areas: contraindications for specific groups, risks associated with concomitant use, guidelines for use, and storage requirements, as detailed below:

Contraindications

‌Pregnant women‌: Compounds such as perillicene may cause mild uterine stimulation; high intake may increase the risk of foetal restlessness, and medicinal-grade extracts must be strictly avoided.

‌Individuals with allergies‌: Those allergic to Lamiaceae plants such as mint or basil should first conduct a low-dose test, as perillaldehyde may induce skin itching, erythema or even respiratory oedema.

‌Special populations‌: Breastfeeding women, infants and young children, and those with impaired liver or kidney function should use this product under medical supervision to avoid an excessive metabolic burden from the active ingredients.

‌Individuals with yin deficiency and excessive internal heat‌: Long-term use may exacerbate symptoms such as dry mouth and throat, hot flushes and night sweats; dosage should be reduced or use discontinued as appropriate.

Risks of Drug Interactions

Concomitant use with‌ anticoagulants (such as warfarin)‌ may enhance the anticoagulant effect, increasing the risk of bleeding; the product should be discontinued two weeks before and after surgery.

Concomitant use with‌ antihypertensive or antidiabetic medicines‌ may synergistically enhance their effects, leading to excessive drops in blood pressure or blood glucose levels; close monitoring of these parameters is required.

Concomitant use with sedatives (such as diazepam) may exacerbate drowsiness; avoid driving or working at heights whilst taking this product.

Directions for Use

The recommended daily intake of oral extracts should not exceed 5 grams; long-term, high-dose intake may irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing discomfort such as bloating, nausea and diarrhoea.

For perilla extract added to skincare products, a patch test behind the ear should be carried out before first use to avoid irritation caused by high concentrations of perillaldehyde.

Avoid dissolving the product directly in water at temperatures above 90°C, as high temperatures can rapidly break down key active ingredients such as rosmarinic acid and perillaldehyde; it is recommended to dissolve it in warm water at 50-60°C.

Storage requirements

tore in a sealed container in a cool, dry place away from light at temperatures below 25°C, with ambient humidity maintained below 60 per cent. Use as soon as possible after opening to prevent moisture absorption, caking and the oxidation and degradation of active ingredients.

If the extract shows signs of mould, an unusual odour or a noticeable darkening of colour, discard it immediately and do not continue to use it.
